Spud, the successful series of books by John Van De Ruit, saw its very first book transformed into a movie in 2010. Now, the cameras are rolling again and the original cast returned for their roles in the sequel.
However, the location has changed. The first movie was filmed in the Natal Midlands at the prestigious Michaelhouse Boarding School. The new movie based on the second book (Spud- The Madness continues) is being filmed at the South African College School (SACS) in Newlands, Cape town (apparently South Africa’s oldest School). Filming commenced early in July this year.

But why wasn’t the movie filmed in the Natal Midlands again, based on the actual roots of the book?
Ross Garland of Rogue Star Films, the production company for the movie, said this was due to budgetary issues. “Transporting all the people to the Natal Midlands was too expensive, so we had a look around Cape Town for an alternative location, all we needed was a beautiful old school and SACS fit the bill” , he told the Cape Times.
South African born actor Troye Sivan plays the lead role of Spud once again with the legendary John Cleese back for his role as The Guv. Other well-known actors in the movie include Julie Summers as Spud’s mom, Tanit Phoenix as the seductive Eve and Rob Van Vuuren will make an appearance. Filming will be completed by early August when Van De Ruit’s fourth and last Spud book (Exit Pursued by a bear) will hit the shelves.
